Portland, Oregon is a vibrant city that effortlessly blends natural beauty with a unique urban charm. Located in the Pacific Northwest, Portland is renowned for its lush green spaces, mouthwatering food scene, and culture that celebrates creativity and sustainability. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast eager to explore scenic trails or chase waterfalls, a foodie on the hunt for the next culinary adventure, or a culture buff ready to dive into the local arts scene, Portland has something to captivate every visitor. Portland is a quick 2-hour flight from San Diego, making this city a great place for a long weekend getaway.  In this post, I'll share the must-visit spots and the best things to do during a trip to Portland.  Best Stay: The Duniway Portland Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Duniway Portland Hotel offers a distinctive blend of modern luxury and classic charm. The hotel features elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each thoughtfully designed with plush bedding, state-of-the-art amenities, and stylish decor that reflects the vibrant energy of Portland. Guests can indulge in culinary delights at the hotel's signature restaurant and sip coffee in the cafe near the lobby.  The Duniway's prime location provides easy access to some of Portland's iconic attractions and neighborhoods. Just steps away from the hotel, visitors can explore the bustling Pioneer Courthouse Square, often called Portland's living room, home to several local food carts.  The hotel's proximity to the city's MAX light rail system and other public transportation options makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider Portland area. Whether you're visiting for business or leisure, the Duniway Portland Hotel offers a unique and luxurious experience that captures the essence of this eclectic and dynamic city. Best Brunch:  Screen Door Pearl District This was my favorite place to eat brunch in Portland. The menu at Screen Door excels in delivering mouth-watering Southern classics. I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, the chicken was so tender and flavorful. I also tried their cinnamon roll and it was so delicious, not overly sweet, and just the right amount of icing.   Among the must-try dishes is the iconic Screen Door Fried Chicken, which boasts a perfect blend of crispy, flavorful batter, and tender, and juicy meat.  The Chicken and Waffles, are a harmonious combination of sweet and savory. For those with a sweet tooth, the Bananas Foster French Toast is a decadent treat that perfectly caps off a satisfying meal. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a leisurely brunch, or a comforting dinner, Screen Door in the Pearl District promises an exceptional dining experience that celebrates the best of Southern cuisine. Best Urban Hiking: Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Macleay Park is a beautiful urban park located in near downtown Portland and is one of the largest urban forests in the U.S. It is known for its dense woodlands and peaceful trails. One of the most popular trails is the Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Trail . The Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Trail is a must-visit 5-mile out-and-back hike in Portland for those seeking a blend of natural beauty and historic charm. The trail winds through lush forest, following Balch Creek and leading hikers past towering trees and occasional wildlife. The highlight of the hike is reaching Pittock Mansion, a historic estate perched on a hill with panoramic views of downtown Portland, Mount Hood, and the Cascade Range. The view is named one of the best views in Portland! Best Unique Foodie Experience: Portland Food Carts Before I visited Portland, I had no idea that Portland is one of the best cities to visit for foodies! The city is famous for its vibrant food cart (food carts are similar to food trucks) scene, offering a diverse range of culinary delights from all over the world. These food carts are scattered across the city in various "pods," or clusters, where you can find everything from gourmet burgers and authentic Thai dishes to vegan treats and freshly brewed coffee. The food cart culture in Portland is all about creativity, affordability, and supporting local businesses, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists. Best Local Market: The Portland Saturday Market  The Portland Saturday Market  is one of the largest continuously operating outdoor arts and crafts markets in the U.S. Located in the Old Town Chinatown district along the waterfront, it runs every Saturday and Sunday from March through December. The market features over 150 local vendors offering a wide range of handcrafted goods, from jewelry and clothing to home décor and artwork. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy live music, street performances, and a variety of food stalls serving international and local cuisine Best Waterfall: Multnomah Falls  This is one of those experiences that is worth the visit and lives up to the hype! Multnomah Falls is one of the tallest year-round waterfalls in the United States and is the most visited nature site in the Pacific Northwest. Just a short drive from Portland, this iconic waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge offers a challenging yet rewarding hike to the top, with stunning views of the falls and gorge along the way. The trail to the top of the waterfall is about 2.3 mi, a paved trail with a steady incline and switchback. The views at the top are amazing! This is easily one of the best waterfalls I’ve seen in the U.S. and one of my favorite things I did during my trip to Portland. Best road trip from the city: Oregon Coastline The Oregon Coast is a breathtaking destination known for its rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and charming seaside towns, making it an ideal escape from the city. The drive from Portland to the coast is just as scenic as the destination, typically taking about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your coastal stop. Along Highway 26 or Highway 6, travelers pass through dense forests, rolling hills, and lush farmlands before reaching the dramatic coastline. Once there, you can explore iconic spots like Cannon Beach with its famous Haystack Rock. I recommend stopping at a local ice cream shop serving Tillamook ice cream!  A weekend getaway in Portland, Oregon, is the perfect way to experience the city’s vibrant culture, stunning natural beauty, and rich history. Whether you’re hiking through Macleay Park, exploring shops and eating delicious food at one of the food cart pods, or enjoying the art and craft treasures at the Portland Saturday Market, this city offers something for every traveler. With so much to do and see, Portland promises an unforgettable weekend filled with adventure, relaxation, and discovery.

  • Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Hiking Boots

Are you ready to hit the trails and embark on a new adventure in the great outdoors? Don't take another step without the right pair of hiking boots! Choosing the perfect hiking boots can make or break your hiking experience, determining whether you conquer challenging terrains with ease or end up with sore feet and blisters halfway through your journey. Let's dive into the world of hiking boots and uncover the secrets to finding your perfect match! Step 1: Know Your Terrain Before you start browsing through an endless array of hiking boots, take a moment to consider the terrain you'll be tackling. Are you planning to explore rugged mountain trails, navigate through muddy forests, or trek across rocky surfaces? Understanding the terrain you'll be hiking on is crucial in selecting the right type of hiking boots that offer the necessary support and protection. Step 2: Boot Type Matters Hiking boots come in various styles and types, each designed to cater to different hiking preferences and terrains. Here are the primary types of hiking boots you'll encounter: Trail Shoes : Lightweight and flexible, perfect for day hikes on well-maintained trails. Hiking Boots : Provide ankle support and durability, ideal for moderate terrains and longer hikes. Backpacking Boots : Heavy-duty boots designed for carrying heavier loads and navigating rough terrains. Choose a boot type that aligns with your hiking style and the challenges you expect to face on your adventures. Step 3: Focus on Fit and Comfort The golden rule of choosing hiking boots is prioritizing fit and comfort above all else. A poorly fitting boot can lead to discomfort and even injuries during your hike. Here's how to ensure the perfect fit: Try Before You Buy : Visit a store and try on different brands and sizes to find the best fit for your feet. Consider Sock Thickness : Remember to wear the socks you intend to hike with while trying on boots to ensure the right fit. Check Toe Room : Your toes should have enough wiggle room to prevent blisters and discomfort on downhill slopes. Step 4: Material Matters The material of your hiking boots influences their durability, waterproofing, and breathability. Common materials used in hiking boots include: Full-Grain Leather : Durable and water-resistant, ideal for rugged terrains. Synthetic : Lightweight and quick-drying, perfect for short, fast hikes. Gore-Tex : Waterproof and breathable, suitable for wet conditions and long hikes. Consider the climate and terrain you'll be hiking in when selecting the material of your boots. Step 5: Test and Break Them In Once you've selected your hiking boots, it's time to put them to the test. Before embarking on a long hike, wear your boots around the house or for short walks to break them in gradually. This process allows the boots to mold to your feet and minimizes the risk of uncomfortable blisters. Choosing the best hiking boots is a crucial step in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience. By considering factors like terrain, boot type, fit, comfort, and material, you can find the perfect pair of boots that will support you every step of the way. So lace up those boots, hit the trails, and conquer the great outdoors with confidence! Remember, your hiking boots are more than just gear – they're your trusted companions on every adventure, guiding you through challenges and victories in the wilderness. Choose wisely, and let your boots lead you to unforgettable experiences in nature! 🌲🌿 Happy hiking! 🥾🌄

  • Temecula, CA City Guide: The Napa Valley of Southern California

Temecula is a city located in southwestern Riverside County, California, approximately 85 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 60 miles north of San Diego. It is known for its beautiful vineyards and wineries, which produce a variety of wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The city also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival, and the Temecula Rod Run. Best time to visit : September/October: If you want to experience warm weather and beautiful, lush vineyards this is the time to visit. These months are still considered peak tourist season, but if you visit later in October, you might be able to avoid some of the crowds. July/August: Not a bad time to go if you want to stroll through the vineyards, but keep in mind it gets very hot in Temecula. If you go during these months, be prepared to sweat! January/Feb/March: If you want to avoid the crowds, this is a great time to go. The only downside is that it is not harvest season so the vineyards will not be lush and green, but on the upside, you won’t have to deal with all the crowds. Getting there : The best way to travel to and around Temecula is by car. There are also many wine tours you can purchase that will drive you around to different wineries. Where to Stay : There are so many unique places to stay from luxury bed and breakfasts to budget friendly hotels. The Vine House Bed and Breakfast $$$$ This family owned and operated B&B is located on the De Portola Wine Trail. The Vine boasts elegant rooms with fireplaces and gourmet breakfast delivered right to your room. The property is also in walking distance to a few wineries. Ponte Vineyard Inn $$$ This elegant hotel is located on a vineyard and offers luxurious rooms, a spa, and a restaurant. It's rated as one of the top hotels in Temecula. Hampton Inn & Suites Temecula $$ Located in the heart of Temecula Valley Wine Country, this hotel offers comfortable and modern rooms and suites with amenities such as an outdoor pool, fitness center, and complimentary breakfast. Things to do : Wine Tasting - Temecula Valley Wine Country is home to over 40 wineries, making it a popular destination for wine tasting and tours. Many of the wineries are located near De Portola Rd and Rancho California Rd. This area is very easy to get around by car. Our favorite winery in Temecula is Wilson Creek Winery ! This winery is known for their sparkling wines, almond (what they are known for) and peach bellini (my favorite)! They also have delicious red and white wines. During the summer they also have wine slushies available for purchase. Old Town Temecula - This historic district features charming shops, restaurants, and galleries, as well as a weekly farmers' market. This is a very walkable area and a great place to explore. Hot Air Balloon Rides - Take a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards and hills of Temecula for breathtaking views. Spa day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs - Located about 30 min from the city center of Temecula sits a full-service day spa. This spa offers relaxing body and facial treatments, mineral baths, and delicious food. Pechanga Resort & Casino - This large resort features a casino, spa, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Outdoor Activities - There are many outdoor activities to enjoy in Temecula, including hiking, biking, golfing, and horseback riding. Temecula Valley Museum - This museum features exhibits and artifacts that highlight the history and culture of Temecula. Where to Eat : Toast $$ Toast is a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant. It is known for its delicious food and cozy atmosphere and has become a favorite among locals and visitors. The menu at Toast features a variety of breakfast and lunch dishes, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Some popular items include the Eggs Benedict and the creme brulee French Toast. The Goat & Vine $$ This local spot offers a menu of wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and salads, as well as a selection of local wines and craft beers. The restaurant is known for its high-quality ingredients and flavorful dishes and has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. This is a very popular restaurant, so I recommend visiting their website and joining the waitlist before you arrive. We love the Hatch Chili Honey Chicken Pizza and we’ve heard their Jacked Cappuccino Ice Cream Cake is delicious! Havana Kitchen $$ This restaurant offers a menu of traditional Cuban dishes, such as Ropa Vieja, Cuban Sandwiches, and Picadillo. They are known for its flavorful and authentic cuisine, as well as its lively atmosphere and live music on certain nights. Guests can also enjoy a selection of Cuban cocktails and other beverages. Our favorite sandwich on the menu is the Ropa-Q, made with Cuban pulled pork, grilled onions, and BBQ sauce! Safety : Overall Temecula is a very safe city and has a very low crime rate. We have always felt very safe during our visits. As with any city, it is always best practice to use wisdom when traveling and be aware of your surroundings. Budget : When setting a budget for your trip to Temecula there are many factors to keep in mind. Many of the hotels in this area average about $200 - $300 per night. The price of the hotels varies during weekends and high season. The high season is typically May to June and September to December. With so many wineries to choose from I recommend choosing no more than 3 wineries/day to visit. I recommend this because you will have more time to enjoy the wine tastings and explore the grounds at the winery. The cost of a wine tasting averages $20- $30 per/person and includes 5-6 tastings/person. If you are not a big wine drinker most wineries will let you share your tasting with your companion. The cost of food is high almost everywhere but in California, I would say it’s probably higher than the national average. Most meals will cost about $15.00 - $20.00 per/person. For the cost of transportation, a rideshare will cost an average of $8.00 - $17.00. Wrap up : I hope this Temecula guide is a helpful resource and inspires you to visit Temecula! If you want assistance planning your trip or have questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment on this post!

Tucked away in a little strip mall in Kearny Mesa, this delicious restaurant offers an extensive menu from family platters full of flavor to induvial entrees. The must-try items on the menu are the chicken shawarma bites and the chicken shawarma entrée. If you're not a fan of chicken, there are many other mouthwatering options to choose from. Tasty Noodle House There is so much truth to the name of this restaurant! Located in the convoy district, this restaurant is serving up delicious authentic Shanghai cuisine. Their extensive menu has so many options from chow mein to orange chicken. Each one of their entrees are large enough to share, so I recommend choosing a few items off the menu for a family style meal. The must try items on the menu are the chow mein and the Shanghai grilled pork buns. Mezze Greek Fusion Mezze Greek Fusion is a popular restaurant located in the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. They offer a unique dining experience by combining Greek and Mediterranean flavors with a modern twist. Mezze refers to a style of dining in Mediterranean cuisine where several small dishes are served as appetizers or snacks to be shared among diners. The restaurant aims to provide a contemporary and innovative take on traditional Greek dishes, incorporating elements from other Mediterranean cuisines and infusing them with local Californian ingredients. At Mezze Greek Fusion, you can expect to find a diverse menu featuring a range of appetizers, salads, wraps, entrees, and desserts. One of the most popular dishes at Mezze Greek Fusion is the lamb gyro: A classic Greek dish consisting of succulent slices of marinated and roasted lamb, served on warm pita bread with tzatziki sauce, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. If you're in San Diego and looking for a fusion of Greek and Mediterranean flavors in a contemporary setting, Mezze Greek Fusion could be a great choice to satisfy your culinary cravings.
